From hackathons to contribution events, October is filled with opportunities to dive into open-source. And yes, I’m talking about the month of “Hacktober

In this article, I’ll share 7 Open Source Events You can take part in this October or, I can say "Hacktober".

Hacktoberfest

Hacktoberfest is a month-long event organized by Digital Ocean that encourages people to contribute to open source throughout October. With thousands of repositories participating, You have a lot of options to contribute based on your experience and preferred tech stack.

This is the event from which I started my open-source journey. It’s friendly, inclusive, and has an amazing community atmosphere.

How to participate:

  • Register on the Hacktoberfest website.

  • Find repositories with the “Hacktoberfest” label and start contributing.

  • Make four valid pull requests (PRs) before October 31st.

Prizes?

  • Get your PRs merged, and you’ll get a tree planted in your name.

  • Plus, bragging rights for supporting the open-source community!

A Few Things to Note:

  • Be sure to check if the repositories are opted into Hacktoberfest before contributing.

  • Only quality contributions will be counted—so no spammy PRs!

It’s a great event to kick off your open-source journey, and who knows, you might end up being a long-term contributor to some amazing projects.

DevFest AI
