“5 Killer Habits” by Sree Krishna Seelam is a wonderful self help book which primarily focuses on five life changing habits which inspire the readers to put in those extra challenging efforts to bring major changes in their lives. The author has tried to convey that true success will only be achieved at the cost of self awareness and the ability to challenge yourself in the most unconventional way. Seelam has properly tried to present this book as an amalgamation of lessons learnt through life, practical experiences gained through interviews and the implementation that followed. This book is all about embracing personal growth while breaking away the societal Expectations.
As we dive into the book, Seelam has beautifully explained the first habit as Arise awake and Kickass focusing on the importance of waking up early. He explains how early rising brings amazing changes to your life highlighting its cultural significance. He laid importance on a good sleep as well, whereas he remained stuck to his point that mornings are ideal for thinking, making decisions, building discipline and progressing towards goals.
In the second habit Be a Hero, the author has emphasized on helping others. He simply shares his own experiences of volunteering and explains that leadership comes with experience, intent and compassion and for that one needs to be at the base level, being a volunteer helping out others. He only wants the youth to be open to the world and to let values guide their life.
The third habit to Become a Dromomaniac is all about the impact solo travelling will lay upon the reader. Seelam highlights the importance of solo travel, deeply rooted in culture. He describes travel as a self development tool that exposes different cultures which will help you in assessing life's priorities and building up your confidence, bravery, Independence and compassion. Along with this he encourages people to embark on solo trips sharing his personal experiences and interviews with the travelers.
In the fourth habit which states to Live a Hundred Lives Seelam presents research and expert opinion on the major impact of reading books. He also emphasized that how one can suffer significant loss in personal growth and knowledge as well, whereas he also states that no excuses will justify of escaping from building a habit of reading a book.
The final habit Stay Curious The Why Habit is all about the importance of questioning beliefs. Seelam beautifully highlights how declining curiosity allows religious preachers to mislead people. He urges the youth to challenge norms, voice their thoughts and to raise questions. Putting his point straightforwardly Seelam has tried to explain what he wanted to convey when he says to be a Rebel, he wants to convey that one should be advocating for a more inquisitive and open minded approach to life and not blindly follow traditions.
Overall Being a Rebel is Central idea to the book and it is the idea of challenging societal norms which may appeal to the younger audience. It focuses on rebellion, responsibility and resilience.
