What is your Favorite Browser?

Publish Date: Dec 20 '19

I assume most of the web developers out there have many browsers installed for cross browser testing.

What is your favorite browser for personal use on desktop and mobile? I'm also curious if/how your opinion changed over time and what features you prefer.

Plus: The one who can first comment the correct names of all browsers of the cover image in the correct order (left to right, top to bottom) gets a little christmas surprise from me... 🎁🎄

I was using Opera for many years. I switched to Vivaldi (because I really liked how I could customize it), but due to performance issues, I switched back to Opera which was running more smoothly on my system (I should try Vivald again now, I was really new when I tried it out).

Currently I'm testing the new chromium based Edge browser (beta) which felt surprisingly fast and isn't using so much system resources as Opera or Vivaldi. I found, that when my laptop is in battery mode, it lasts much longer when I use Edge instead of Opera, although both are built on chromium. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm using Chrome because I guess I'm just too used to using it that it would feel weird not using it now.
I've thought about moving to something else but I honestly can't think of a better alternative tbh.

Brave has all the advantages and feel of Chrome with all of your favorite Chrome extensions (it's based on Chromium, the open source version of Chrome). It comes pre-installed with the best privacy first experience with any browser I've yet to use. It is built to be more preformant than vanilla Chrome as well.

They even have a brave rewards system where the only real ads you'll typically see are from them and viewing and interacting with these ads will let you earn points that you can do things with, like give them to your favorite content creators on the web to support them.

Are you using Chrome on Android too?

I would suggest to start using Firefox there
      play.google.com/store/apps/details...

For me that was a game changer compared to Chrome/Android

      • Ads and privacy issues are much worse on mobile

Opera for many years with FF as a secondary. Now it's Brave by a long shot. I have a love/hate relationship with Brave though because it's Chrome based and I'm trying to get rid of anything associated with Google. At least it's Chromium though.

Opera is my browser to go for many years. When I started using it, it had features that today are there by default on other browsers but at that time they weren't.

What I instantly miss today when I am not on Opera? the sidebar with the social accounts integration and other tools.

I always have chrome as a secondary browser. I use opera more at home and chrome at work.

I was a Chrome user for a long time. RAM issues & privacy concerns made me look for a new browser. The new Opera GX looked promising, since it was also based on chromium and i loved their CPU & RAM limiters. It's still in Early Access, so there's lot of performance issues and crashes. I've become more concerned about online privacy & security recently, so i switched to Firefox. Loving it. Esp. with Firefox's Multi-Account Container.

Brave is my favorite browser. It's fast, performs super fast, clean and professional. It comes out of the box with probably the best privacy first add blocking package. The brave rewards system is brilliant, to see adds you choose to see and getting rewarded for it (instead of feeling harassed by adds) and using those point to give you your favorite content creators on the web. All the chrome extensions. Was a huge fan (and still love very much) FireFox, but Brave has stolen my heart.

Nothing's beat chromium for me. I tried brave (might need to look at it again, it's been awhile), tried Firefox when they switched to quantum. But chromium just wins for me as far as performance goes. Plus the "chromium apps" are great for people that want to use window managers like i3. I can pin a chromium app to a keyboard shortcut.

I mean, there's a reason everyone is building off if it, hell even Microsoft said screw it and now builds edge on it.

Personally, I feel that Yandex doesn't get enough love. The UI is clean, the interface is simple.. unfortunately the language can be an issue sometimes because it's a Russian browser- but as a native speaker it's definitely got my vote. And with Google chrome as a close second because, let's be honest, Google is the Disney of web surfing

I try to dabble in a few browsers but my go-to is definitely Chrome. I'm really getting a chance to dive into the capabilities of the inspector when maintaining sites on the job.

TL;DR - 1. Chrome, 2. Brave if I didn't need to monitor several sites for performance

When QA testing, there is the need to dive into other browsers (Safari, Firefox, Edge, unfortunately IE -- yuck) so I find that they all have some similar features but their dev tools do differ slightly (element selection, folding, minimizing by selector etc.).

I went to Brave for a brief time but I ran into an issue where I wasn't getting a true look at a website when troubleshooting it's performance due to the privacy settings of the browser. Don't get me wrong, it really comes in handy, because you can view a website without tracking kicking in or even a malicious script kicking in aaaaand you can also toggle the blocking.

Firefox + uBlock Origin - because privacy is important to me. I consider ads to be a privacy threat because Facebook and Google sell ads in
in real time auctions. When advertising campaigns know less or nothing
about me, real-time auctions wouldn't work at all.

Brave + React DevTools - because for some development tasks I need a Blink/V8 environment.

On iOS I use Safari and Mozilla Focus - again, because I care about privacy.

My favourite desktop and mobile browser is Vivaldi. Prior to Vivaldi it was the old Presto Opera. For specific things I'm also a fan of Brave, Firefox and Beaker.

I can't identify all the browsers at the top but since I like a challenge I'm going to list all the ones I can identify or guess at!

1st Row: Seamonkey, Pale Moon, [pass], Safari, Chrome Canary
2nd Row: [pass], Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge
3rd Row: [pass], Maxthon, Yandex Browser, Internet Explorer, Vivaldi

I'm curious now about the ones I can't identify!

Firefox, hands down. I am strongly considering not using Chrome at all, because it's very heavy on my computer, and I hate Google sniffing around everything I do.
I'm experimentinf witb Opera, but lately it's been very sluggish. I think I will play around with some of the others on this list. Some of them I've never heard of. Insightful!

  • FieldMarshallVague

Thank you. I had somewhat similar misgivings about the ads and did wonder about the 'approved ads', which I've totally blocked.

I'm not so fussed about the extensions, they're 3rd party, so I'll be dealing with 3rd parties wherever I go. If, however, Google are injecting their own code into those extensions, then I'd be worried, but AFAIK that's not happening.

Guess my current use case is 'limit the exposure to google, but still make use of them'. I've tried using DDG, but it still really sucks compared to G and Bing in many areas (e.g. indexing SPAs).

Think I might have Stockholm syndrome as far as the dev tools are concerned :D
