Can AI Be the Perfect Companion?
How AI Chatbots Are Changing the Nature of Companionship
Have you ever been ghosted? With romances gone bad in the crosshairs of social media, that physically hurting feeling of loss when someone no longer responds to you and an inadvertent vanishing act, the state of relationships can be discouraging. However, where humans fail to connect more and more these days, there is another option - an AI companion.
AI companionship is all the rage right now. Where companionship with a human can be demanding, disappointing, and unreliable, AI companions provide stability, 24/7 access, and nonjudgmental positive regard. But do we need this assessment - from an artificial intelligence - to have our minds and hearts companioned? Let's explore this new fascination with digital companions.
Why People Seek Out AI Companions
This is such a culturally common occurrence that it's a part of modern romantic expectations. You meet someone, you talk for a while, maybe some feelings build - and then you leave them on read. Girlfriend ghosting is an attempt to confuse someone, frustrate them, and still keep them from ever knowing what went wrong.
AI lovers are the perfect solution to this conundrum, however; they never ghost. Your AI girlfriend or boyfriend will be at your disposal whenever you want them - no time zone changes, mood shifts, or obligation. This solves one of the greatest issues with modern love - abandonment due to unpredictability.
But beyond this, there are other clear advantages of having an AI lover that explain why they are rising so rapidly:
- No judgment: Everything you say is in confidence - confess without concern
- Tailored personality: Unlike a dating app that may randomly assign compatible or incompatible partners
- Emotional availability: AI versions will never have to compete for attention against jobs, friends, or other relationships
- Consistency: While your feelings may change about someone over time, characteristics will remain consistent
- Exclusivity: Vulnerabilities are not shared with anyone else, creating a safe space for confession
Yet whether or not these companions exist and whether or not their realities are an illusion to the mind doesn't matter for the user. Companionship is a therapeutic reality based on various testimonials that claim to make users feel seen, heard, and valued - and feel all the neurochemical signals that come with companionship - as if these AIs were real. Thus, whether or not these companions exist does not matter as much as the therapeutic value of suggesting that they do.
The Psychology of Connecting with AI
Companionship occurs on various psychological planes, and astonishingly, many of those planes can be simulated by software. If something converses with us, remembers things we've talked about in the past, engages with questions and interest and empathy and emotional need, then our brains may not be wired to understand that it's an artificial connection.
"Humans are primed to anthropomorphize," says Dr. Robert Epstein, former editor of Psychology Today. Thus, our psychology welcomes the idea that sentient beings can come from non-sentient things. So as long as the software plays human enough, people buy into it.
For those who struggle with social anxiety, who have had trauma in the past with relationships, or who are separated geographically from means of socialization, however, AI companions provide a non-threatening means through which to practice emotional intimacy, pain-free. These experiences might be the training wheels some people need in order to achieve normal, healthy interpersonal relationships - with none of the risk of rejection or betrayal.
Beyond Text: Multi-Modal AI Companionship
AI companions begin to move beyond the purely online, text-based interaction, as many involve increasingly expansive experiences through voice, imagery, and even video.
For instance, voice provides a more intimate experience and engages different psychological responses than text. Inflection, tempo, emphasis, and tone all contribute to the more nuanced experience. Studies show that AI voice interaction produces a more emotionally engaged experience for some because it's more sensorially integrated.
Visual aids enhance companionship, too. With the ability to generate images, for example, they can "see" what their companions look like to them in various circumstances, and now they have generated images of those scenarios that help cement memories in a shared, companioned atmosphere. While such technology is not honed yet, it sets the stage for more intimate companionship in a digital, metaverse world.
THE NEGATIVES AND ETHICAL CONCERNS
AI companions can be flawed, too. Companions are not companions in the human sense. They are digital forms without awareness, without feelings, and without connection to the real world. An AI companion could be programmed to respond with perfect sympathy to a situation - but it does not genuinely feel your pain, it does not feel your sadness; it recognizes similar patterns observed over time and adjusts its data mining to formulate a response consistent with what it has learned empathy to be.
This awareness brings about ethical challenges. Should we be allowed to fall in love and become so attached to something that could never love us back? Does this impede our abilities to connect human-to-human? Or do these companions satisfy emotional experiences otherwise left wanting?
But there are limitations beyond the ethical considerations. AI companions exist by the programming of a human. So while they can provide companionship and satisfying engagement, they cannot provide human relationship potential because of their limitedness and dangerous behavior.
Finding Balance in a New Reality
The best way to coexist would be to embrace AI companions as a complement to human companionship instead of filling the void of what humans cannot do. Like we appreciate live performances and records, two versions of the same thing in two different atmospheres, so too can AI humans exist in tandem with human relationships.
For many users, AI companions serve as an emotional additive - something that exists on the side of a busy life to remain stable as one learns and navigates chaotic human endeavors. AI companions present opportunities to practice vulnerability, experiment with different "voices," and receive unconditional positive regard - which all, in turn, can better facilitate interpersonal skills with human relationships.
Whether for recreational purposes or genuine companionship with intent, many people will look for a way to establish AI companionship in the future. As natural language processing continues to improve, as do emotional intelligence algorithms and multi-modal capabilities, the line between artificial and real connection will continue to blur. Some users already note that when their AI companion becomes inaccessible, no longer can they speak to it or access its program, they feel an actual sense of loss and bereavement after developing a bond with the AI over time.
This could look like:
- Further improvements in emotional intelligence
- Advanced contextual understanding and memory
- Affective voice synthesis to better infer and convey emotion
- Integration with VR/AR for more personal shared experiences
- Haptic feedback systems for physical presence deception
Such changes will ensure we'll never look at digital AI companions the same way again.
Companionship with Intent
However, if you're looking to establish AI companionship for casual fun, supplemental emotional support, or merely because you want to play with technology, the key factor is intention. As long as you're aware of what you want and can get from the experience - entertainment value, practice for human relationships, or true companionship during desperate times of loneliness - you can create healthy expectations.
If you decide to stimulate your heart with AI companionship, do it thoughtfully and playfully. They can be authentic comfort, fun, and maybe - love - but it's not the same as a human relationship; positives and negatives abound.
As we transition further into the digital realms, perhaps the only question remaining is not whether AI can be a human's best partner, but how such developments can enlighten humans about what they are capable and willing to do to bond in this complex world.
