Thinking of Contracting? Questions to ask yourself first.

In the past, I've talked about the structural aspects of contracting. Since then I've seen a few people questioning if contracting (specifically contract-employee) is a good option for them.

Contracting isn't for everyone. While I know some people who have been contracting their whole careers, some hate it. However, if you look around, you'll find quite a lot of people making good money with contracting so that's why I wanted to share this information.

Here's some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How much do you value company perks and benefits.
  2. How important is company provided health care. Can you get health coverage from a spouse/partner?
  3. Do you work significant overtime? Are you paid for OT?
  4. Do you enjoy settling in at a company or do you like to move around?
  5. Would you consider giving up some company perks and befits for a higher take home pay?
  6. What is your main motivation for even considering contracting?

My friends and I created a couple videos on contracting.

Though I've been a contracting for a while now, it doesn't mean I'll stay one forever. I'm curious to know how many people on DEV are contractors? What pushed you into contracting? Or if you are not a contractor, are you considering it a option?

Oh, if you have any feedback on the videos, I've love to hear that too...it's our first ever videos.
