We're back with another Frontend Challenge, and this time we're getting into the Halloween spirit! 🎃👻

Running through November 9, Frontend Challenge: Halloween Edition invites you to showcase your frontend skills with spooky creativity.

Whether you're a CSS wizard, a JavaScript sorcerer, or somewhere in between, this challenge is the perfect opportunity to build something fun and sharpen your skills.

We hope you give it a try!

The Prompts

CSS Art: Halloween

Create a work of art using primarily CSS! Let Halloween inspire you - jack-o-lanterns, haunted houses, creepy spiders, or anything else the season brings to mind!

CSS Art Submission Link

Note: We're now allowing a sprinkle of JavaScript in CSS Art submissions! However, judging will continue focus primarily on the CSS component, so keep JavaScript usage light and purposeful. The star of the show should still be your CSS skills.

Perfect Landing: Halloween

Build a polished, functional landing page with a Halloween theme. This could be for a halloween history lesson, a fictional product, halloween event, or anything you can imagine as long as it captures the spirit of the season and demonstrates excellent frontend fundamentals.

Perfect Landing Submission Template

Note: You may now use JavaScript, TypeScript, Dart, WebAssembly, or any other browser-compatible language/runtime in your Perfect Landing submissions! Show us what modern web development can do.

Judging Criteria and Prizes

CSS Art submissions will be evaluated on:

  • Creativity
  • Effective Use of CSS
  • Aesthetic Outcome

Perfect Landing submissions will be evaluated on:

  • Accessibility
  • Usability and User Experience
  • Creativity
  • Code quality

Prizes

Each prompt winner will receive a DEV++ Membership and an exclusive DEV Badge. All Participants with a valid submission will receive a completion badge on their DEV profile.

How To Participate

Publish a post using the submission template provided above. You can submit to one or both prompts, and you can make multiple submissions per prompt (just publish a separate post for each).

You can level up your post by embedding your project directly in your submission. Embeds to consider:

  • Google Cloud Run: {% embed cloud_run_link %}
  • CodePen: {% codepen https://... %}

Please review our judging criteria, rules, guidelines, and FAQ page before submitting so you understand our participation guidelines and official contest rules such as eligibility requirements.

    Good luck everyone!

    You may now use JavaScript, TypeScript, Dart, WebAssembly, or any other browser-compatible language/runtime in your Perfect Landing submissions!

    We added this mostly just to clarify that within frontend tech you have a lot of flexibility, but if anybody wants to wow us with unique non-JS experiences have at it!

    Cool, I am going to try and enter. I have never used Javascript or CSS (I had to google what it was) or anything like this before. So will be something new to try, and can make it fit into my project too. 🧟‍♂️

    I'm assuming the article is meant to read "each prompt winner will", and not "each prompt will will". I assume not every prompt entry gets a DEV++ membership?
