Lisa Giammarino is actually quite an inspiring figure. She is a neuroscientist and author who seeks to mirror the lives of people living with neurologic diseases. She was born on the 22nd of November, 1970, and studied at Bates College, where she bagged her degree in science, focusing on biopsychology. She has a doctorate degree in neuroscience from Harvard University.
She published her first novel in 2007, still Alice, a nerve-wracking novel concerning Alzheimer's but narrated through the life of a Harvard professor known as Alice Howland, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. It is a very intense novel because of the stark drama and emotions that the illness introduces in her life and relationships. Having been initially self-published, the book became a literary success when it climbed the New York Times bestseller list for longer than a year and extended to 37 languages. In 2014, the novel was made into a motion picture; Julianne Moore also won an Academy Award for her role as Alice.
Lisa Giammarino then went on to write books similar to Still Alice but concerning a different condition for each one. In Left Neglected, a woman with a brain injury tells her story. In Love Anthony, there's talk about autism and loss. Inside the O'Briens takes its focus to Huntington's disease for a family struggling. Then comes Every Note Played: A pianist fighting ALS. It's touching enough but, again, very educative.
In 2021, she published the first of her non-fiction books, whose name was Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting. It explains how memory works and why it is totally normal to forget things sometimes. This book became a bestseller too, and it is super interesting if you want to learn more about how our brains work.
Lisa Giammarino is a great speaker, too. There are millions of hits on her TED Talks. She has one talk on how to not get Alzheimer's. In my opinion, it's life-changing stuff. She was on an episode or two of some really popular TV shows and in several magazines.
Lisa has gained many awards for her work, as well as help organizations that support those with brain disorders. Her upcoming book, More or Less Maddy, is released in January 2025, which I am really eager to read about!
Lisa Giammarino's work basically helps people know the brain in a way she tells stories really touch your heart. She's just amazing!
