What is Black Friday?

I'm British, so maybe I am missing something, but I thought I had an understanding about Black Friday.

  1. It's a day.
  2. On that day consumers treat retail staff and each other badly.
  3. On that day corporations treat retail staff and consumers badly.
  4. It's the Friday after Thanks Giving in the USA.

If all of that is true, this advert from OVHcloud is worrying and confusing, because

  1. Black Friday for developers seems like I'm going to have a bad time, as a developer.
  2. Isn't USA Thanks Giving in October? It's January when I am seeing the ad.

Hi! Thanks for bringing this to our attention @mellen. Your understanding of Black Friday is the same as my own, and it appears to be an oversight that this billboard is still running.

Black Friday is one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the US. Named so cause that day, figuratively is when many retail places are "in the black" or make most of their profits for the year.
Thanksgiving is in October for Canada and US it's in November. It's marks gratitude for the end of harvest season. So it's earlier in Canada since they have a shorter season.
Black Friday for developers just mean we have a sale for stuff for developers. It shouldn't be showing in January. Now they should be saying "new year, new savings" or "make your resolution in the cloud."
