Trump’s newly announced tariffs have sparked widespread criticism on social media, with users pointing out flaws in the logic behind them. The tariffs, which include a baseline 10% rate and additional charges against certain countries, were deemed “statistically wrong” by critics. The logic behind the tariffs, particularly the claim that trade deficits with countries like Indonesia determine their tariff rates, was exposed as nonsensical. Economist James Surowiecki debunked the White House’s formula, revealing it was based on a simple division of trade deficits by exports.

Further controversy arose when it was suggested that chatbots, such as ChatGPT and others, might have influenced the tariff formula. Brad Delong noted that prompts to these AI tools for solving trade imbalances consistently generated the same “deficit divided by exports” formula. Critics argued that Trump’s reliance on chatbots, rather than experienced economists, could be disastrous, with some even linking his decisions to Elon Musk’s use of the encrypted app Signal, fueling accusations of unqualified decision-making.
