Why mixture ideology with technology?. The gray world is better.

Hi William! The team at DEV believes that the world is best when we’re all empowered to be our true, colorful selves — and that includes the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Our ideology is that an inclusive technology field brings a diversity of thought, which is key to the development of the best possible tools, technologies, and visionary futures to make the industry and the world a better place.

I hope this helps you understand why we are celebrating Pride Month on DEV!

I know my comment can be pretty unpopular but I think that sexual orientations should be detached from non-sexual contexts like this one.

I mean, everyone have to be free to express its own sexuality but I don't see the meaning of bringing it to every context (like it is widely happening in the last years).
In a certain way it looks like a hyper-sexualization of life and a social status.
You are gay? Cool! You are bi, trans, hetero or something else? Cool the same... but, just for this reason, why should I care of it like, for example, in a dev community?

Not last, the LGBTQ+ movement actually (and very sadly) has become a political matter and I guess this should be a neutral/apolitical stuff (other than this is also ruining part of the initial and valuable intentions of the rights movement).

Hope you will consider a different point of view like mine and won't censure it, as we are just speaking of freedom, open-mindedness and respect.

Hey there! DEV is an inclusive community that celebrates diversity and champions folks from marginalized backgrounds. This is a big part of our values and it's important to us that we create a warm, welcoming space for LGBTQ2S+ folks.

While we want you to feel comfortable expressing your feelings, we have a Code of Conduct you agreed to when you signed up that makes our values clear and states amongst many other things:

Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:
      ...

      • Dismissing or attacking inclusion-oriented requests

While your statement is carefully crafted and seems like it's coming from a genuine place, it still feels dismissive and close-minded to insinuate that you don't think this belongs here. This topic fits our community very well and is important to us. LGBTQ2S+ folks have been marginalized in tech throughout history and continue to be; we believe it's important to recognize these facts and to try to create a space that includes and celebrates our fellow LGBTQ2S+ developers & folks working in tech.

Going forward, please keep these thoughts to yourself. We don't want to explain or debate concepts of social justice with you and we don't want you to put others in a position to explain themselves either. This post is meant to be celebratory in nature and is not an invitation for debate.

Thank you for understanding the peaceful tones of my comment.
I guess anyway there is a misunderstanding: I' m not "dismissing or attacking inclusion-oriented requests",
I'm just saying: "why inclusion should be sexually (and politically) related?".
I can include anyone despite to everything: ethnicity, culture, religion, or by disability, skin color (black, yellow, white, red, mixed.. and not just black as they do politically), etc...
but I don't see any "pride month" or the very same attention to this other fields.

I'm on the first line to inclusion as you can see, I'm just pointing the attention that the actual focus is only about sexuality and, to be honest, I don't see all this discrimination in tech industry.
All the biggest techs are super gay friendly, Google, Amazon, Meta... the whole star system... so much that also my bank(!!) showed the rainbow logo! ... just to make some important example.

About the Code of Conduct: there is a point that I don't understand:

We will not act on complaints regarding:
‘Reverse’ -isms, including ‘reverse racism,’ ‘reverse sexism,’ and ‘cisphobia’

So, do you REALLY think that permitting racism and sessism is good and inclusive if "reversed"?
In my opinion, racism, sexism and discriminations need to be condemned ALWAYS and not only one way.
I don't want any response from you cause, as you rightly said, this post is meant to be celebratory in nature and is not an invitation for debate.
We can talk somewhere else if you like peaceful and clean debate, otherwise no problem the same, I'm just closing the argument here.

        Have a good day!

Hey kolesso, it's me again. We need to talk about reverse racism now.

Yes, a person of a minority class can discriminate against a person of a majority class, call them a race/sex-based insult, the whole nine-yards. You can call this racism/sexism if you would like, I typically go for racial/sexual prejudice or discrimination. Means a lot of the same thing. At DEV, we would treat this as seriously as any other harassment or discrimination claim. Insults are insults, no special exceptions given.

The reason why it's different when a majority class does it to a minority class is because the majority class has institutional power. What can the minority class really do? Call them an insult? Make a group that excludes the majority class (Black-only, Women-only, Queer-only spaces, etc.)? That's about it. Offer anything else that the minority class can do against the majority class because I really can't think of anything.

What can the majority class do against the minority class though? They can vote to have all their rights taken away. They could gather collectively to bar the minority class of resources. They can force the minority class into labor in order to get the resources that are being claimed by the majority. They could then claim the credit of that labor as their own toils, discrediting the minority groups who actually did the work. Do you see what I'm getting at here? The majority class in most cases has State or Institutional power in whichever situation you'd like to mention, meaning that not only can they call you a race-based insult, they can discriminate against you directly or indirectly because of your identity in ways that essentially ruin your life.

That's the reason why race, sex, and other identity-based discriminations cannot be a two-way street. The discrimination is much much more potent when it's coming from the people in power. The United States is a very obvious example, but I promise the same thing exists in Europe. By the way, I'm using the terms "majority" and "minority" class here loosely, it doesn't need to be about population. It could be about wealth if you want to look at South Africa, or any other number of examples, espcially in post-colonized states.

There's a separate reason why your bank and every other company on the planet goes gay every June and that's Rainbow Capitalism. In a nutshell, companies realize that gay people usually don't have kids either for legal reasons or because they don't want them. Not having kids means having a ton of expendable income. Having expendable income means companies want to advertise to you more. It's really not that complicated.

Pride is not just about sexuality, is about inclusion.

DEV is an inclusive platform, I don't see the difference in ideologies here.

Also, if this is not brought to light how it will shine? I am a white straight dude that lives in the middle of diversity, but not everyone is like that. If you live in privilege, among others with the same values/privileges how would you learn there is more diversity out there if it is not brought to light!? I'm sorry you may feel this is excessive, or feel uncomfortable, but is nothing like the suffering many of my friends had to go through coming out of the closet.

Dear Raí, thank you for your reply.
Pride is about inclusion through sexuality but, as I wrote before to Michael, inclusion passes through many many other fields (ethnicity, culture, skin color, religion, disabilities, etc...) and I don't see any "pride month" or the very same attention to this other fields.
LGBTQ+, is also politically oriented and that keeps me aware to take it with a lot of cautions.

If you read my previous comment I just posted you understand better my thought, probably.

Have a good day you too!

This is actually a really interesting comment, thank you for bringing this up. First, we need to talk about something called Intersectionality, which is the way that your personal traits and attributes like your sex, gender, class or caste, race, religion, disability, etc. affect your life. Your sexual orientation is just one facet of this, but all of these elements collectively come together to create your lived experience.

Talking about gender identities and sexual orientations is not a hypersexualization of life. We are not overly or unusually concerned with sexual matters. These are completely normal human lifestyles that have been censured because of close-minded people. It's not like you and I are sitting here getting hot and steamy in our pants about legal discrimination. As for the social status thing, I think that folks that may annoy you with how excited they are about being in the LGBTQ+ community are:

      1. Celebrating legitimate contributions and successes across the year.
      2. Happy that they can express themselves freely when before they were forced to be silent.
      3. Going to stop screaming about it within like a couple years. Many of them are just new to being themselves and really happy about it. I promise you they'll be done and some new people who are also excited about realizing they are gay will show up to take their place.

The reason why we want to highlight folks who are gay or bisexual in different contexts is because they have made significant cultural contributions while also being discriminated against socially and legally (see: Alan Turing, Edie Windsor, Jon "Maddog" Hall, etc). Until the mainstream can come to accept queer people and their contributions, as well as end legal discrimination against these communities, we're going to have to continue to advocate for these groups.

I'm not understanding your comment about the LGBTQ+ community becoming political as most things in life are political. Most anything you consume is going to have political commentary in it or be in some way related to public affairs. It's just part of being in a society. If anything, the LGBTQ+ community must be political because otherwise we're just sitting ducks for anti-gay and anti-trans legislation from the other party. However, most LGBTQ+ people are not radical protestors. The vast majority us are just trying to express ourselves freely and live our lives in peace while not getting attacked for it.

Hope you will do the same for me and consider my different point of view, as I am also coming from a place of open-mindedness and respect.

First of all, happy Pride Month! 🌈

But let's not forget that, for a long time (and in some companies and in some countries, that may still be true today), we LGBT+ devs have had to face toxic environments towards our community, in IT spaces in general.

So, for a long time, devs had to "remain in the closet" at work.

Posts like these, from the DEV Community here, are still incredibly important. Thank you for that! #devpride
