We are so excited to partner with our diamond sponsor, Neon to bring the community a brand new challenge.

Running through September 01, the Neon Open Source Starter Kit Challenge is an opportunity to optimize your preferred stack and show off your writing skills.

There is one prompt for this challenge but three opportunities to win!

Our Prompt

Your mandate is to build the ultimate open source starter kit and document how to use it so that developers everywhere can use your starter kit to build their apps. The only requirement is using Postgres on Neon for the database.

All submissions will be judged on Clarity of Instructions, Developer Experience, Applicability, and Usability.

Winners and Prizes

We’ll be selecting three winners for this challenge. Each winner will receive:

  • $1,000 USD
  • Exclusive DEV Badge
  • A gift from the DEV Shop

All Participants with a valid submission will receive a completion badge on their DEV profile.

How To Participate

In order to participate, you will need to publish a post using the submission template provided below. All submissions must have an open source license, have a thorough and clear readme to help developers utilize the starter kit, and include Postgres on Neon as part of the stack.

Fair enough, I understand where you're coming from! But I think that most of your questions are covered in the rules page here:

    dev.to/challenges/neon

Personally, I've participated in multiple DEV hackathons and have had nothing but positive experiences, with fair judging from the DEV team (❤️). I've participated in other hackathons not organized by DEV. Some I won and some I didn't. But in general, these events can be a great way to learn, challenge yourself, and even meet like-minded developers. But if a contest doesn't feel right for you, it's okay to skip it and focus on opportunities that better match your goals 😊

In my personal view here, it's important to choose competitions and events that align with your interests and where you feel the effort is worth it. However, no one is forcing anyone to participate—it's completely your choice :)

On the starter kit question, in this particular case, the prompt should be self-explenatory, in general, a SaaS starter kit is a ready-made package that includes basic tools and code to help developers quickly create and launch an online software service. Out of the box, it comes with features like user accounts, dashboards, and security, subscriptions, so developers can spend less time on the basics and more time on customizing and improving their software.

If only this could be extended for just one more day. I'm really down right now and would love to submit what I'm building 😢. It's been a series of setbacks—GitHub blocked my account, and I found out about the challenge several days after it was announced. Now my project isn't ready, and it feels like all the effort might go to waste.
