Use M1/M2 For Software Development, good and bad

CPU Image

Good

At current stage, most of apps are out of box without any issues. I was very impressive in the beginning. As a new CPU released in November 2020, this is quite good.

Bad

Virtual Box not work (it has a beta version now)

If Virtual Box is required for your work, Silicon Valley is not ready yet.

Unreal Engine does not work

So if you are a UE game developer, for now Silicon Valley CPU is not a good option for now. Unity as another popular game engine, it is ready for use on M1/M2 Mac machine now.

Docker image, need the ARM version now

  • The good thing is that most of docker images are ARM ready now, unless some old images are required for the development, there is no problems to use Docker Desktop or Rancher Desktop for the local virtualization set up.

To know more, there is an online database users contributing to tell whether the app is apple silicon ready.
