Google has confirmed a technical issue that led to the loss of Timeline data for some Google Maps users—location histories suddenly vanished, and in some cases, are unrecoverable. The company stated that only users with cloud backups enabled might be able to restore their data. The glitch follows Google's shift to storing Maps location data on-device for privacy reasons, which, while beneficial, now shows the risks of data loss. This isn’t the first time users have been caught off guard by changes to Google’s location data policies.
